Managing Our Resources
What We Are Given
Recently, our pastor gave a sermon where he talked about “the good life.” As a part of this sermon, he discussed how we all have been given three resources: Time, Opportunity, and Money. And it is up to us to determine how we will utilize those resources. How we are managing our resources has an impact on our overall contentment.
When we look at time, none of us know how long we will be here. We hope that we all will live long and successful lives. With this said, equal time is given to us all. We all have twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. How we elect to utilize this time is up to us.
The next was opportunity. We all are given opportunities in our life. While some may have more than others, I think it is safe to say that nobody will go through life without being presented with any opportunities. And, it is safe to say that some opportunities are much easier to pursue than others.
Now the third, money. Again, this one might not be equal. There is definitely disparity in this area. But, we all know that the amount of money we have in the beginning does not predestine us to success or failure. Furthermore, if we learn to manage our time, take chances on our opportunities, then money has a good chance of coming our way.
Managing Our Resources: Three Options
Next, he went on to ask, “What will you do with your resources?” We have three choices for each of the resources that we have been given: 1) spend them, 2) waste them, or 3) invest them. He went on to say how it is more important to do more with less than a little with more. I found this very profound. It might have been the moment, but this really resonated with me.
This probably resonated with me because I know that I have not always been the best steward with the resources that I have been given. I know that during my youth I spent a lot of time in the spend and waste areas. Most likely because when I was young, I thought that there would always be more time. But, of the three, this is the most important.
As I have grown older, Time has become one of my most valued resources. I want to have time with my wife, my children, my friends, God, and a career. The career has shifted down the list as I have reached my current position. I used to devote so much time to work and the pursuit of success and money. Personally, I have seen how my misguided goals impacted my personal success. But, I have turned this around, and it is really great.
I then began thinking about how these three resources were so important to business. And this simple lesson is very valuable in focusing on your key business objectives. Unless we are living at work, we have far less time to devote to our business. We also will have limited opportunities that will come our way. And how well these two items are managed will have a major impact on our money.
